A great way to have your grocery money go further is by purchasing what is in season. Food is more plentiful and often tastes better when purchased within its normal growing season. So I thought it would be fun for a new year’s resolution to try all the foods that are in-season during each month. You can check out a previous post about eating with the seasons here.
Here is a list for January in-season produce. I have included a recipe for most of the item that I thought looked tasty. For others, I suggest ways to use. I will let you know if any of the recipes are exceptionally tasty!
- Broccoli – Roasted Broccoli
- Brussels Sprouts – Roasted Brussels Sprouts
- Cabbage – I make this recipe regularly and we love it. Curtido
- Cauliflower – Whole Roasted Cauliflower
- Grapefruit – Plain is great!
- Kale – I like to add to soups or stir fries right before done cooking. Just tear up in small pieces before adding to your dishes.
- Leeks – Quinoa and Leek Patties
- Lemons – Squeeze over your salads.
- Oranges – Fresh of course!
- Parsnips – Roasted Garlic, Parsnip, and White Bean Soup
- Rutabagas – Rutabaga Pommes Anna
- Tangelos – Tangelo Relish
- Tangerines – Whole Tangerine Gluten Free Cake
- Turnips – Sweet Turnip and Carrot Soup
Trying new foods can be good for our health too as we get a variety of nutrients from different foods. Potatoes and tomatoes are by far the most common vegetables consumed according to the USDA; and the most common fruits are oranges and apples. So the average American doesn’t get much variety in their produce. Who knows, you just might find a fruit or vegetable that you really like. So who is with me for some adventure in the kitchen with trying some different foods this year?
If you have a great recipe for any of the above produce items, share in the comments below.
Be Blessed,
Heather

You are welcome. I had a chance to try the tangerine cake and it is pretty good.
