It is the end of January and here in Minnesota we are enjoying extremely cold temps. Yes, I said “enjoying” because it is all in our attitude right? Anyways, it is cold outside and we may need to warm up on our insides.
Did you know foods can have a warming or cooling effect on our bodies? One food that can have a warming effect on the body is the tuberous rhizome ginger.
This spice is native to southeastern Asia, India, and China. The Spaniards later introduced ginger to the West Indies, Mexico, and South America. It became popular in Europe as it became more available and was included on every table setting like salt and pepper.
It was also one of the spices used against the plague during medieval times. People would sprinkle it on to their beer and so it became known as ginger ale.
Ginger has been valued for its aromatic, culinary, and medicinal properties.
Here are some health benefits of ginger:
- Boosts the Immune System: Ginger has antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. That is a lot of “anti” power to battle infections, allergies, and cold symptoms.
- Relieves Upset Stomach and Nausea: Ginger has been used medicinally for thousands of years for the treatment of nausea.
- Anti-inflammatory Properties: There is a compound in ginger called gingerol which blocks inflammation.
- Blood Sugar Regulation: A daily dose of ginger has been shown to help control blood sugar regulation in diabetics.
- Digestive Aid: Ginger can help with indigestion, heartburn, bloating, and gas by stimulating the muscles in your intestine.
I also added cardamom to this tea. I love this spice and have started using it a lot more in my baking and cooking.
Cardamom benefits include treating teeth and gum infections, throat troubles, congestion of the lungs, pulmonary tuberculosis, inflammation of eyelids and digestive disorders. It is also used to break up kidney stones and gall stones.
So here is an awesome warming tea you can enjoy on cold days or anytime you want to experience the healing benefits of ginger and cardamom.

Honey Ginger Tea
Ingredients
- 1-1/2 cups filtered water
- 1/2 inch fresh organic ginger root
- 3-4 pods of cardamom
- juice from 1/2 of a lemon
- 1/2 teaspoon raw honey
Instructions
- Bring the water to a boil in a small sauce pan.
- While the water comes to a boil, peel the ginger and slice into very thin pieces.
- Once the water is boiling, add the ginger and cardamom pods.
- Cover and turn down to low, simmer for 10 minutes.
- After 10 minutes remove from heat and strain.
- If using raw honey and you want to preserve the healing components of the honey, allow the tea to cool to approximately 115 degrees and then stir in the honey and lemon juice.
- Enjoy.
