This adorable building is the home of The Good Acre (yes, the building sits on an acre of land). This has been the home of this nonprofit organization since 2015. The mission of The Good Acre states
“We connect and strengthen farmers, food makers, and communities through good food.”
Who doesn’t love good food?
How they fulfill their mission:
The organization provides a facility for local farmers to clean, process, and store their produce. I had the opportunity to tour the facility in January. It is a beautiful building which provides classroom rental, a shared-use kitchen, cleaning and distribution area for local farmers, and cold storage (the refrigerators and freezers are huge!). The organization is definitely set up to help the local farmers. The community also benefits by this with being able to have access to local food from these farmers.
The most impressive way the farmers and community are brought together is through the Farm Share Program. This is The Good Acre’s version of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). They offer three different share types and a couple of additional add-on features such as egg or bread. Check out this post if you would like to learn more about their Farm Share Programs for the 2019 season. There are still shares available.
An added benefit to becoming a member of the program is that you will receive a 10% discount on cooking classes. They offer many cooking classes. I had the opportunity to observe a class in February where we learned ways to prepare three different fish called Fast and Fresh Fish. The class was taught by Joan and David from Savory Pursuits. It was a fun class and I learned some new techniques for preparing fish! You can check out The Good Acre website for upcoming classes from the various instructors.
The Good Acre is definitely fulfilling their mission of bringing the farmers and the community together. As a Health and Wellness Consultant, I thoroughly believe in the benefits of eating locally sourced food. It is not only great for your health, but also for your community.
“By building our own health, we are building a healthy community.”
If you are looking for fresh, local produce or for how-to cooking classes, The Good Acre can assist you on your health journey.
Be Blessed,
Heather
