December is Exotic Fruit month! Who knew exotic fruits had their own month? To celebrate, it is a great time to explore what exotic fruits that may be at your local grocery store. You may find a new favorite one! Most grocery stores have a small section for the more exotic/rare fruits – so check it out. Once you see what your grocery store has, you can easily search ways to eat them if you have a smart phone with you. You can do a quick google search. You may even be able to find a great recipe too.
I encourage you to try at least a couple of them this season. Here is a list that can be helpful.
Exotic Fruits To Try
Chom Chom also know as Rambutan. I did a post on this one and you can check it out here.
Durian – apparently this is a “love it or hate it” fruit! It is one of the most nutritious fruits as it is rich in fiber, B vitamins, and vitamin C.
Mangosteen provide a variety of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber while being low in calories.
Longan fruit is an excellent source of potassium, vitamin C, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, and numerous B vitamins.
Persimmon can be eaten fresh, dried, or cooked. They are high in vitamins A, C, and B, potassium, and manganese.
Spodilla is a high-calorie fruit but is a great source of dietary fiber. It is immensely rich in vitamins A and C. It also contains potassium, copper, iron, and a few of the B vitamins.
Jackfruit provides fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. FYI this one can be used as a meat replacement and may be found canned in grocery stores and used as a substitute for pulled pork. Check out a recipe here.
Dragon fruit tastes like a combination of kiwi and pear. They are packed with fiber and antioxidants. There are pink and white versions. I like the pink better.
For me, I have tried three of them on the list. The past few years, I always get a few persimmons in December as I really like them; and again, it is a special treat.
Exotic fruits can be a delicious change to what fruit you eat. They can provide antioxidants, vitamins A, C, iron, and phosphorus to name a few nutrients. It can be fun to try them with your kids or grandkids. When I have taught cooking classes for elementary kids, one of their favorite things to do is try new fruits. Well, most will try. One year I had a child that would not try any of the foods. I know some adults like that also! This world has so many wonderful fruits and vegetables out there, why not give them a try?
